The Age of Sincerity

Sometimes funny. Sometimes political. Always quoting Jay-Z.

You know how people always say that…”Oh, thats the character people love to hate.”

I don’t love hating anything, especially characters. With my lack of cable or DVR I tend to watch most of my TV after the fact, on DVDs or websites.

If I start watching a show and there is a character I don’t like, I will go to wikipedia and find out how long that character sticks around and whether or not they get a comeuppance. If they go away or get their due I’ll keep watching. If not, I walk away.

Seriously, I would rather spoil a portion of the show than watch some character be a dick and never be punished for it. I never find it entertaining, I just want to bludgeon them.

I just started watching Californication and I hate one of the characters so much I just wiki’ed it and it looks like I won’t be going past episode 6. Which is too bad because I am enjoying the show anytime that character is not around.

I just despise watching people be cunty to each other. This is why I am possibly the only person ever who HATED Real World: San Francisco (except for Pedro and probably Mohammad, and later Jo) but LOVED Real World: London. I would rather people mostly get along and kind of argue about a bike being stolen and dog poop than pay any attention to Puck who was just rude for no reason.

In real life I have zero tolerance for people who are mean or rude for no reason other than them needing attention. It’s a problem actually, and has led to more than one argument with a stranger in public. Friends of mine have pointed out over the years that I have the ability to be cruel and cutting when I want to be. Well, never cruel really, but if you’re good at reading people you can usually tell their insecurities. A clever burn is never as effective as one that lets the person know that you know how and why they are insecure. My old roommate used to like to invite me to dinner parties where there would be some guy from work that was rude or talked down to her, just to watch me shut him down. I always joke that I only use my powers for good.

I know my brother is a big fan but I can’t watch people being shitty to each other on reality shows either. It just makes me sad. Maybe I’ll be stuck sitting next to that horrible person on a plane sometime or have to deal with someone like that at work. No thanks. My favorite reality shows are thing like Project Runway where you have to display an actual talent. And even then, I zone out when the drama comes up.

In fact I won’t even type the names of people I despise, like random faux celebs. I refuse to add to the amount of hits they get on google. Why complain about them and then give them attention? Seems counter-intuitive to me.
