Thinking back on it, I think when Jim Henson died it was the first time I felt effected by a death.

I had this big extended family when I was a kid and so I had been to funerals but they weren’t personal to me. I remember being sad and scared when he died. Did it mean the Muppets would go away?

And since he made the Muppets I pictured him as this magical man who must be so kind and fun and I was sad that such a thing was taken from the world. I was so young, but it was the first time I felt loss. Even though I didn’t know him, being so young and having the Muppets and Sesame Street be such a big part of my life meant that it hurt me in a much more personal way that the death of those family members I didn’t really know all that well.

Muppets make everything better. They really do.

Somehow a video featuring the KKK is very heartening!

Ole Miss decided to stop playing the song “From Dixie, With Love” at their football games because the audience would chant “the south will rise again” every time it was played. The Klan was outraged by the fact that the rest of the world wants to move on so they decided to hold a demonstration at Ole Miss before the football game against LSU.

This video, taken by a counter-protester, shows that less than a dozen hooded cowards showed up while a few hundred Southerners (Ole Miss students, and it looks likes some parents, teachers, etc) showed up to let the KKK know they weren’t wanted.

My only problem is that too many counter protesters used the word “faggot.” But I’m not one of these people that thinks you have to do things perfectly or not do it. We can make this the next thing to work on.

Bonus: it’s pretty funny to hear a guy with a big southern accent yelling at the klan about them probably lacking education. He’s so elitist! But he’s not on a coast!

I hope the South does rise again. I hope it rises to a level where this kind of activity becomes completely unheard of. The fact is that there is racism everywhere and to act like it is only in the South is disingenuous. But having been called racist names on the street in the South, I will say it was more openly tolerated there than I had ever experienced.

I recently watched The Dark Knight again. It was the first time I had seen it since I saw it in the theatre.

I really liked it the first time but I liked it even more this time. On a second watching I actually thought the weird Batman voice bothered me much less. After all, he is trying to hide his identity.

I don’t know how she mistook my outgoing message for that of a major appliance company, but she did. She left her phone number and full address and sounded like she really needed to be helped out, so I looked up the company’s information and gave them a call. I asked the apathetic customer service woman to send her a copy. “IT’S ON OUR WEBSITE MA’AM.” I explained to her what happened and told her that I doubted the elderly lady even knew what the internet was. Then I got the idea to just print the manual out myself and send it to her.

I really think the most annoying thing about what Kanye did at the VMAs is being unable to avoid Taylor Swift since.

My boyfriend actually mutes the TV or changes the channel when she appears and she shows up on our TVs all the time since that moment. I was cooking during most of the show, only walking over to watch the performances I wanted to see. But every now and again the TV would go mute. I knew it meant she had either won something or her commercial came on. Her songs were on loop as we boarded our flight home from Vegas last week. They were just playing it in the cabin. Not as an option.

I watched the American Music Awards tonight.

Through most of the show I kept thinking that a lot of people looked like they were trying to dress like Lady Gaga, so I was wondering what she would war.

Then she shows up and looks like she isn’t wearing anything. Perfect.

Also, Rascal Flatts is apparently the new Alabama. I think you have to have watched as many awards shows as a kid to understand that, so good luck to you.
